Since a young child, I have always yearned to be outside. To explore, find and to collect things. To feel fully immersed and grounded in a place.
Painting is my intuitive response to this feeling of connection with places, an innate energy.
My work summons this sense of recognition, a familiarity with landscape, its natural elements and entwining weather. It portrays how, with me amongst them, these continuously change throughout the year.
I am particularly drawn to water and texture and constantly explore new ways for these to resonate through mark and colour.
Living and working in Wicklow, I draw great inspiration from the differing landscapes of coastline and hills.
My background is in Graphic Design, I hold a Diploma with Distinction and an Honours Degree from IADT. On graduating, I established my own Graphic Design business, colouringbox, which for the last twenty years has brought me along a creative, however, very disciplined path.
I had long felt there was something much more to explore, and believe I have found that creative avenue through painting.
My first exhibition ‘A Year of Painting’ in 2017, was exactly that, twelve months spent learning, experimenting, painting and smiling. Thirty six paintings of places travelled to in that time, from The Outer Hebrides in Scotland, to Cork, Wexford and my home county of Wicklow. It’s not by chance all these places have loved ones living there. I am excited to think of the many millions of places I have yet to explore!
I was awarded a two week residency at Cill Rialaig in Ballinskelligs, Kerry in November 2017, a thoroughly incredible experience.
